British Pedal Car Grand Prix – New Milton
The British Pedal Car Grand Prix needed a reliable lap timing system for their annual race.
The British Pedal Car Grand Prix needed a reliable lap timing system for their annual race. Initially, they used a MyLaps loop-based timing setup with a decoder connected via serial port. We stepped in to modernise and streamline the process, making timing data accessible in real time for both organisers and the public.

The challenge
The existing system was rigid and relied on proprietary software, limiting flexibility and visibility. Organisers wanted real-time lap data, team information, and a way to share results online. Later, hardware availability issues meant we had to rethink the entire approach without MyLaps equipment.
The solution
We built a custom application that intercepted the decoder’s serial data, splitting it into read/write and read-only streams. This allowed the original software to function while our app collected transponder data and lap times. The data was sent to a PHP API backend, powering a simple web app for live race updates and team info.
When MyLaps hardware became unavailable, we developed a new solution using 815 MHz RFID tracking and a “hot line” system to detect cars crossing the finish. We even integrated a receipt printer to print instant lap confirmations and final results at the end of the race.
The results
Our solution transformed race timing for the event:
Real-time lap data was available online and on mobile, improving spectator engagement.
Organisers gained a flexible, reliable system that worked even without MyLaps hardware.
Instant printed results added a professional touch and reduced manual errors.
The British Pedal Car Grand Prix had a modern, adaptable timing system that kept the event running smoothly for several years and enhanced the experience for teams and fans alike.
